Abstract
Background: Quality of life after gastrointestinal surgery has become an increasingly important criteria because of an increase in the long-term survival rate due to improved medical care. Therefore, it cannot be determined only in terms of hard clinical data, such as postoperative weight loss, frequency of daily meals or bowel emptying. Quality of life should include patient-subjective clinical data.
Material: The article of Eypasch, which introduced Gastrointestinal Life Quality Index (GLQI), was reviewed.
Conclusion: GLQI is a patient-subjective, but highly valid, sensitive, and reproducible questionnaire, so that it could be used to assess the more detailed and accurate life quality of the patient and to compare the surgical methods in the gastrointestinal tract. To confirm this conclusion more studies and modifications are necessary.
